THE SOLDIERS' CHRISTMAS

MAYOR AND MAYORESS TO THE : FORE. There may lie those young single men eligible for service who are refraining from enlisting until after Christmas, under the impression that by, so doing they will miss the- joys of the festive season. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), with his usual promptitude, has already taken steps to do his Jjest to provide "A Merry Christmas" for the men in camp, and it is hoped one that all who participate will remember for the 'rest of their lives. He conferred with -Colonel Porter, Commandant at Trentliam, prior to his recent visit to Auckland, when he was advised that things wore too unsettled to permit of a definite programme being carried out. On his return, however, he found that the Mayoress had convened a meeting of her committee to discuss Christmas-in-camp matters, with the result that it has been decided to have Chrismas dinner at Trentham on Thursday, December 23. On. his part, the Mayor lias arranged to entertain as many men as possible at the Town Hall on Christmas Day, pro-, viding them with a midday as well as an evening meal, by which means Wellington will offer its hospitality to "the ■boys in khaki." In connection with this function, the Mayor invites citizens to show their practical patriotism by helping him to do tho right thing in a manner worthy of the City.
