EXEMPTION OF INSURANCE DISCUSSED.
A statement concerning the possible exemption in future by . insurance and the personal earnings of the applicant up to reasonable amounts in assessing the war pensions to be paid to dependents of soldiers killed, was made by the Prime. Minister yesterday. "Rightly or _ wrongly," said Mr. Massey, "Parliament decided that in the case of wealthy individuals the wealth or income should be taken into consideration by the board in assessing the pension to be paid. If it is not perfectly clear that- the board may exempt insurance up to a reasonable ■amount, and personal earnings up to a. Teasonablo_ amount, then I am quite willing that it should be made clear b.v legislation if necessary.' I should even .be in favour of making it mandatory upon the board to exempt insuranco and porsonal earnings up to reasonable amounts. I think th© amount of exemption for insurance should not be less than £500, but I think very possibly Cabinet may agree to a bigger exemption than that. I do not care to say off-hand, what I think would be a reasonable exemption, in the cage of personal earnings. ,r
