THE CALL FOR MEN
OFFICIAL STATEMENT. The Chief of the General Staff stated yesterday that "on paper," as a result of last week's recruiting, the 11th Reinforcements going into camp on December 14 had been It was' expected, however, that a considerable proportion of the latest men enlisted would be rejected as medically unfit, and that .a further number of those who had signed on for the Elevenths would fail to turn up. This being so, the Defence authorities required a further 300 men to enlist at once to go into camp next week. It is stated also that the present position -has been wholly arrived at as a result of the response made by the Wellington Military District.
The statement which appeared in our lea.ding ' columns yesterday, to the- : effect that at the beginning of the present, week the Eleventh Reinforcements -were 587 short of their complement, -was not an official announcement by the Defence Department.'The statement that there was a shortage of 587 was, we may explain, the result, of a calculation based on the recruiting figure's 1 published from time to time. The.position yesterday, as officially reported, was -that "on paper" the complement of the Eleventh Reinforcements has been secured, but after making allowance for the fact that some of the, latest volunteers would probably be rejected as medically unfit, while others, may fail to turn up, the'authorities require a. further 300 men to enlist, at once so as'to go into camp next week. A feature of the recent recruiting figures is the fine contribution made by the Hawke's Bay district.' It is contended by some people that the establishment of local camps is necessary for tho maintenance of a satisfactory rate of recruiting, but the Hawke's Bay figures, and indeed the Taranaki figures as well, indicate that it' is quite possible to secure good results without Tesorting to this costly expedient. The latest available figures show' that Hawke's Bay,_which was asked for 80 infantry for the Eleventh * Reinforcements, lias now recured 106 passed as fit, and had 79 waiting'for examination. This district has now been asked to contribute 35 extra infantry to go into camp on December 9 for the purpose of making good] shortages in the Tenth Reinforcements. Practically sufficient men to meet this extra call had been secured by the end' of last week. LATEST ENLISTMENTS. The following have enlisted and have been, passed .fit:: — ■ .
