CITY HOTELS

[ LICENSING COMMITTEE MEETS. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at tho quarterly meeting of the Wellington Licensing Committee yesterday, ana, in the course of his remarks, named several hotels which had. been unfavourably reported upon by 'the. polioe. In two hotels, he. said, there had been suspicion of after-hours trading; while in the case of two others the .report was that the premises were frequented b.V undesirable women, and that sufficient care was not taken to guard against this sort of thing. One licensee had recently been convicted for permitting drunkenness, and in this respect was isaid to be lax in -the conduct of tho hotel. In still another case the licensee had been convicted of supplying liquor to a constable while on duty, and the evidence showed , that he (tho licensee) was in the habit of leaving a bottle outside. . The only remark which His Worship could make in connection with this case was that the licensee had forgotten some of the principles which should necessarily be observed in conducting his hotel. There were other hotels which ivore-well conducted,. and, the Licensing Committee could see no reason. why tho hotels previously named could not.be. conducted in the same manner. If no improvement., took place during tho next quarter, tho committee would have to notify the owners of the houses that the promises were not being conducted in a satisfactory manner. Transfers _wcre approvdd as follow: — Duko of Edinburgh Hotel from Richard; Dwyer to F. J. Oakes; Grand Hotel from E. L. Chafley to E. M. Page; Clyde Quay Hotel from C. A.
