SWIMMING
swms CLUB'S ANNUAL REPORT, The seventeenth year of the Swifts Amateur Swimming Club was one in which the interest of members could not be sustained owing to the call of the Empire to _ its young manhood for active service in the war against Germany and her allies (says the annual report). It is pleasing to note that so many swimmers from all the city cluba have joined tho colours. As far as is known, 60 members and ex-members of fcho Swifts iiave enlisted, this number not including a goodly of exmembers 'who at the time of their enlistment were active members of other -• clubs in the oity. It is a matter for deep regret that Messrs. J. Geddes, R. A. Bayliffe, W. Findlay, 0. Frcyberg, N. 6. M'Lean, and G. Paterson have been called on to make tho supreme sacrifice which they so willingly offered, and members can but oxtend to the of these herons the sympathy which arises from . the loss of thoso whose duty has been nobly done. Messrs. B. C. Freyberg, M. S. Galloway. E. E. Jenltinson, A. M. Smith, W. Power, W. Hill, B. Palmer, P. C. Dement, L. Salek, and L. V. Cozens have been reported wounded or sick, and. it is hoped that their recovery will be both sure and rapid. Depletion of tho active swimmers' list will effectively prevent any competitive swimming among senior members during the coming season, and it only remains to bo seen whpther a committee of mombors can he olccted who will be in a position to devote'the necessary time io the work of fostering swimming among the juniors. Last season club races drew poor fields, but were, as a result of good handicapping, well contested. 'Rio Smith Cup ".as won by J. D. Richardson, who is a promising young swimmer. No oarni. val was held by tho club, and 110 waterpolo competition was run by tho Wellington Centre. The Walker and Hall Cup was competed for at a carnival arranged by the centre on tho occasion of Duke Kahanamoku's visi*. ami was won by the Thorndon Club. Tho Swifts Club was unable to select n team with tho remotest chance of defending tho Cup owing to the fact that so many of its best swimmers were on active service.
