LA CROIX ROUGE

A CONCERT AND AN APPEAL. ' ' A concert in aid of the French Red Cross Funds was given in the Concert Chamber last night. Captain Barclay announced to tho large audience present that the entertainment was preliminary to tho inauguration of a genoral movement throughout New Zealand in aid of the Red Cross organisation of our .great Ally, the aim of which movement would be to arrange for a. French Red Cross Day throughout New Zealand.- Captain Barclay rend a letter from tho Countess of Liverpool regretting her inability to be present, - because she was entertaining the staff of tho No; 2 Hosnital Ship. A letter was also read (by Mile, du Bosson);., from M. Julien Rigoreau,' French " Consul at Auckland, wishing tho entertainment success, and regretting that he could not be present. 1 The entertainment was bright, novel, and thoroughly enjoyable for those who knew French even a little. Miss Zita Cljapman'recited "The Hero of the Coinniuue," an account of an incident of troublous Fimes in French history. Mr. King gave a Shakespearean recital in French, for the bard of Avon is not unknown in Franoe. Mile, du Bosson and Mr. Leo. Buckeridge gave a duet in character, "Les Alsaciens," an attractive item, which was recalled. Miss Janet Anson recited "Apres le Battaille," an episode -out of one of Victor 'Hugo's frorks. Mr. W. B. Hudson gave an interesting talk about "Chateaux of the Loire," illustrated by lantern sTides. Mr. J. M. Clark's item was English—a very good item. Mr. Loo Buckeridge sang the Prologue and Romance from "Simon Boccanejjra" (Verdi) very acceptably. The last item was a little French comedy, "Le Testament do Mde Patural," in which the chief characters were taken by Mile, du Bosson, Miss Mead, Mrs. D. Hulme, Miss Forbes, and Miss Prendergast. After the performance Mr. T. V. Waters sang "The Marseillaise," which was received with much enthusiasm.
