MERCHANT SERVICE GUILD

A meeting of tlie executive of the Merchant Service Guild was held yesterday morning, and the * agreement matte of tile guild and the liiiion Company was presented by the secretary (Captain Macindoe), who, with, Captain Lobb, acted for the guild at the conference. The agreement •provides for a general increase-of ■15 P®F cent, in the salaries of masters and officers of the company's vessels trading in and to New Zealand. The executive was pleased to think that the whole business had been settled amicably, and in a manner which should give satisfaction to the majority of members Die guild was pleased that it had beeii arranged that uniform trimmings should be supplied in future, .following the practice which, 'although almost universal in England, had not hitherto obtained in New Zealand. A concession which- is .important is the granting of 21 days animal holiday to all icasterfij captains of cargo steamers having previously had only 17 days. It is also agreed that all masters shall be entitled to two clear periods of 24 hours each away from the ship in every month. The agreement will come before the Conciliation Council in Wellington to-day, in order that it may be sent on to tl'io Arbitration Court to be mad© an Award.
