A letter was received suggesting that a street collection be taken up in "Wellington in' aid of the Blue Cross Society (a society whoso duty it is to care for wounded horses at' the front). The local society having already given between forty and fifty pounds for that object, it was decidcd not to do anything in the matter. '"A ,letter was received : protesting against ail article' recently published locally suggesting various remedies for stopping fowls from eating their own eggs. The article suggested, among other things, the following remedies "Cutting the bird's beak. The mandibles, both upper'and lower, are. quite soft, save for the edging of horn. Procure a sharp knife, and,take tl'Ji egg-eater between the knees, and cut the point of the beak.- JDo it delicately, whittling, away the hard, clear edge. When the _ blood is seen showing through it is time to ston. Do the same with tho lower" mandible. Care should i>e taken not to draw blood. In this condition the hen's beak is so sore that she can peck at nothing hard, although able to pick up gram and eat soft food." It was decided that shopld any cases of this come under the society's notice action would bo taken'.
