TRAVELLERS PASSPORTS
DIFFICULTIES IN AUSTRALIA.
A number of applications for passports have' been made to the Federal Government lately by New Zealand citizens passing through Melbourne on their way to Europe, Egypt, or other places. It has been stated by the applicants oither that- tliej' have neglected to obtain a passport before leaving New Zealand, or that they have had insufficient time at their disposal to permit of their obtaining the document before leaving. Ono difficulty which presents itself to such applicants is that they know no ono in Australia who can .declare, from personal knowledge of them, that they aro fit and proper persons to receive a passport. Another is that thoy are sometimes scarcoly able to obtain the requisite photographs in the short time at their disposal. ' ■
"In view of the difficulties experienced by New Zealand applicants for passports in Australia," said tho Prime Minister yesterday, "it is highly desirable that the documents should be obtained by them before leaving New Zealand, particularly as action is being taken bo ensure that as far as possible all bona-fide passengers from this country are supplied with passports bjforo departure. .
