GENERAL BIRDWOOD IN CHARGE

GENERAL GODLEY TO LEAD ANZAC : S BRIGADIER-GENERAL RUSSELL TO SUCCEED HIM Important changes have been made in the. higher commands at. the Dardanelles, which have brought big promotions to two New Zealand officers. General Birdwood, _ formerly in command of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps; and lately acting in command of tho operations in Gallipoli has been appointed permanently to this command. Major-General Godley has been given command of the Australian and New Zealand. Army Corps, and his former command, the Australian and New Zealand Division, has been given to Brigadier-General Russell, n lately commanding the New Zealand Mounted Tho Anzac troops comprise iwo divisions, . one a composite division of Australians and' New Zealanders, now under Sir A: H. Russeli, and the other an Australian division, of which Briga-dier-General Leg)je is in command. ° The Defence Minister has cabled congratulations to the promoted generals. The messages follow:— To General Birdwood: May every success be with you and the Dardanelles Army. Hearty congratulations and best wishes. ■

To Major-General Godley: 'Hearty congratulations on your promotion to command of the Australian and New Zealand Army, Corps. May continuous success attend you and your command, and health and strength be with you. To Brigadier-Goneral Russell: Hearty congratulations. May you and Anzac win further laurels' for our country. . General-Birdwood has replied as follows:— Many thanks for all good wishes. But my chief wish is to serve with my _ Anzac corps until wo have achieved'final victory. General Godley, replying to an inquiry in his message from Mr. Allen, has cabled:— , The move makes no difference to my command of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, whose interests I hopy to serve even better in my new post than I have been able to do heretofore.
