THE KING'S APPRECIATION
"PROUD OF THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS."
A cable message was received yesterday morning by the Hon. J. Allen from Lieut.-Coloncj Rhodes, who has returned from Lemnos, via Anzac, to Alexandria.
Colonel Rhodes' isaid that he had seen our infantry before he left in the trenches and the mounted men at Bauchop's Hill. They were well and in pood spirits, and greatly improved by their rest at Lemnos.
At- Anzac," cabled 1 Colonel Rhodes, "Lord Kitchener, Rave me the. fallowing message from the King for iransmission to New Zealand:—
" 'His Majesty the King desires: me to express his appreciation of the bravery displayed by : New Zealand troops at Gallipoli, and to say that he was proud of their achievements ; that they had made a name for themselves in 'history, and that tlieir deeds would never, never be forgotten.'"
General Birdwood also had desired Colonel Rhodes to express his appreciation and admiration of the New Zealanders' conduct in the army corps which was commanded by him. General Godley and his staff ware in good health.
Colonel Rhodes said he hoped to finish at Alexandria in a few, days and then he would proceed to Cairo. T
