INSTITUTE MEETING. The Wellington District Educational Institute met on Friday .nicM. Air J C., Webb presided. . * On the motion of Miss Coad, the following remit, which has been adopted previously, was reaffirmed: "That Section 73, Slib-Section (7) of the Education Act, 1914, be amended to read as follows 'If any school is, at the beginning of any year, placed in Grade I, in a higher grade, and the school is thereafter changed in grade, no teacher shall on account; of, such change' suffer a reduction in salary or allowances from what he would have received if no such change had taken place.' "

Miss Myers moved, "That the same stand'alrd! of efficiency should he the basis of classification for al. teachers," but the motion .was defeated on the ground of vagueness. A remit, moved by Mr. E. H. Balfacliey, was adopted as follows"That Section (2), of the Public Service Classification and Superannuation Amendment Act. 1908, as amended in 1909, should be so altered as to remove all restrictions with regard to the receipt 'of Government pay; provided only that , such paytogether with retiring allowance, shall in no case exceed, in any one year, either (a) £300, or (b) the annual salary of the recipient at the time of his retirement, whichever is the greater."

The president reported that for the Hospital Ship the committee had recently got' together 500 feeders, 500 face-cloths, and 250 balaclavas. A motion favouring the introduction of women inspectors was rejected.

Mr. ; W. W. Rowutroe moved and it was "That the regulations governing the readjustment of school staffs be So amended that any four coiisecutivel quarters shall constitute a year." Mr. W. Foster moved: "That it is essential to the welfare of the education service in. New Zealand that the scale of salaries shall, as soon as normal conditions are restored, be so amended as to providp for teachers in grades I and II -who have ten years of efficient service proceeding to a higher maximum salary than that already provided."
