In the value of Austria' 3 trade tliero was an estimated contraction of £68,000,000, or over 60 per cent, during tho earlier lialf of the current year. The uren.test follingo/T in raw materials occurred in grain, seeds, 'cattle, hides, and skins, materials for the textile industries, and coal. Among serai-manufactured poods, cotton yarns Rlono showed an increase. Under manufactured articleß tho falli«g-off was general, but it was most marked in machines, textiles, articles of dress, rubber goods, instruments, and w&tcheß, vehicles, iron, metal goods, and mineral • oils. The* export? of wholly manufactured goods declined about 60 pel* cent.,' as compared with tho first six months of 1914, tho decreases being especially marked in refined sugar, textiles, and articles of dress, wooden goods, leather, glass, iron, n<nd industrial 'metals, machines,- ohemicals, and t paper wares. Under the heading of semi-manu-factured goods there were decreases generally, but more especially in yarns, leather, wood (partly worked up), and fats. Tho decreases in the export of raw materials were cliicfly in.- cattle and animal - products, sucih as hides, skins, eggs, and feathers, and in undressed timber, mineral fuel, and raw wool.

WOOL, SKIN. AND HIDE SALES. Tho fortnightly sales of wool, skin, and hides were held yesterday.
Messrs..'Dalgcty and Company, Limited, reiport having offered a good catalogue of ,#kW9 and hides, wool offered principally consisting of bag lots. Competition, when compared with last sale, was dull, no doubt owing to a number of outside buyers being busy with the main wool -sales. Skins were lower by from id. to. '}d„ and hides also showed a decline of from id. to id. Tallow was firm at late rates.
Messrs: Levin and Company report:—ln wool only a few fadges wero offered. Wool is being held for. tho sale on December 10. The sheepskins market was Arm, and there is no change to record. Hides wero slightly ewrfeT, and tallow was'firm.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agrency Co., Ltd.; report:—Tliero was a Eood demand lor skinii. and. hides, but at a. lower range of . prices .than ruled last sale. Skins and hides were from Jd. to Id. down. Bags ajid odd packages: of wool sold readily-at'market rates. Tallow arid flat sold at Is. to 25.. per owt. advance on late rates. j Messrs. Murray, Roberts and.Co. report:— We offered a catalogue of 4800 sheepskins, 1100 hides and oalfskins, and oddments of tallow. Some of the usual buyers who attend our sales wero not represented, probably owing to the wool sale at Auckland on Thursday. . Prices for sheepskins were the whole id. to jd. per lb. lower than last sale. Hides were.hardly so high in the heavy sorts as recently, being jd. per lb. on the average lower; light-weieht hides, however, fairly maintained the level of last sale ' Tallow showed' an advance of £1 pe" ton. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report:—We offered a fair catalogue of >all classes of produce.. There was good competition, and prices remained' firm, except for skins, which wero somewhat easier.

On July 30 the rate rcflfi raised to 4 per cent., and on July 31 it was raised to 8 per cent., and on August 1 it was further advanced to 10 per cent. On August 6 tho rate was reduced to 6 per cent., on Auuust 7 it was further rcduccd to 5 per cent., at which rate it now stands. The Bonk of France rate is 5 per cent., as against 4 per cent, prior to the war. OPEN MARKET : RATE. The open market discount rate for three months' bills is' 5i per cent., as compared with 5) per ccnt. lae tweck, and 2J to 23 per cent, last year.
