H.M. TRADE COMMISSIONER
MR. W. G. .WICKHAM PROMOTED
TO- SOUTH AFRICA,
There will be interest in the news that Mr. \V. G. Wickhani, His Majesty's Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, has been promoted ■to the Commissionership of South Africa, in succession to, Sir R. Southern Holland, Kt., Who. has resigned that position, but still retains his status under the British Board of' Trade. The matter of Mr. Wickham's promotion has been on the cards for .some few weeks past, aB Mr. Wickham thought that he might be serving the board to advantage by remaining in New Zealand for some time longer, but lie has now received definite instructions to proceed to South Africa, at as early a date as possible. As .there are no steamers at present running between Australia and Cape Town, it will be necessary for him to proceed to England, and so out to Capo Town, and he has already made arrangements to leave Auckland by the Niagara on December 28, en route to. London. This will afford him the desired opportunity of meeting his isuccessor (whose, name is not yet available for publication) at Vancouver, for reasons that will be obvious. The new commissioner will come to New Zealand by the Niagara, arriving about February .9.
Mr. Wickham will have been four years in New Zealand on Christmas Ere'next.
