AUSTRALIA AGAIN SHOWS THE WAY

A message from Australia io-day tells us that the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, Sr. Hughes, has intimated that the call has come for still more men, and that his Government has made the response to be-expected- In addition to the regular drafts of reinforcements of 9500 men monthly, the Commonwealth Government proposes to raise within the next four months a special force of 50,000 men. It can only be assumed that some special intimation has been conveyed by the Imperial Authorities to our neighbours across the _ Tasman Sea which has prompted this spirited response. Presumably it relates to the development in the Near East. And wliat of New Zealand? Me. Massey, when Questioned on the subject, had nothing to say that could be regarded as throwing any light cm thc_ matter. Do the Imperial Authorities nowadays always make first appeal to Australia, or is bur own Government less prompt to realise the necessity for action than is the Commonwealth Ministry 1 What occasion can there be for secrecy in New Zealand when in Australia the people are told of this new call for greater effort? The Government, we trust, will give an oarly answer to the questions raised by the news to hand.
