' NOTES AND COMMENTS IBz <3lencob.l Amongst the runners in tho big handi* cap at Takapuna to-day is tho four-year-old Mullingar, a much-fancied Auckland Cup candidate. The bay gelding will have the services of B. Deeley. Everything points to the Ashhurst.Racing Club having a good meeting to-day. The fields ara and those who attend the meeting should enjoy good sport. In the Hack Hurdles Cyro, who shapes well over small fences, should be at home amongst the weak lot opposing him. Avon Park, who is top weight- in the open sprint event, is an unlikely starter, and the favourite may bo the Wanganui-owned Lady iliddleton. Hushabye won at Opaki, and ran good races, at Ricearton in better class than sho will meet s to-day. In the Plying Hack Handicap E. R-eed lias been seoured to ride the Awapuni-trained Jean Laddo, who goes £ast over a short course. Square Deal, Bst. 81b;, may bo the fancy in the Cup, but in a slow-ran race Jem, ,Bst. lib., and Sicily; 7st. 21b., may both show up. . _
Solferino, who is now at the stud at Onniaru, was represented by several yearlings at the last Newmarket sales, and one of them brought 910gns. in the Ting. Solferino's stud fee was ii-JB.
North East, who is getting .up in years, is still ablo to win races in Melbourne. At Caulfield on Novemlwr 13 he started favourite in tho Kasouka Hurdles, and, ridden by E. Cameron, won easily. Hyllus,- who made a runaway race of the Musket Stakes at Bllerslie on November 6, is engaged in the Cambria Handicap, run over tho same distance, at Takapuua to-day. Lady Elysian, Rekenui, and Independence, who finished behind the Karaniu chestnut at Ellerslie, are again opposing 'him to-day.
Amongst the winners at Caulfield on November 13 was the Waikanae-bred Bourlang (Bezonian—Nerve), who won tho Stanmore Handicap for two-vear-olds. He started favourite, and,'currying Bst. 121b., accounted for a big field. G. Jones, who took Diavolo to Sydney in the early spring, returned by the Moeraki yesterday. Diavolo hurt himself when he fell at Plemington, and Jones was of the opinion that it was useless rein Australia. Southern racing folk are looking forward with interest to another meeting between Desert Gold and Warstep in the Auckland Plate. When the pair met in the Stead Cup tho three-year-old found her feet much quicker than Warstep, and the break thus gained materially'assisted her to score. Warstep had dons no sprinting before tho meeting, and her trainer is of opinion that this .was the cause of her slowness oft the mark. When Downham won the A.R.C. Hallway Handicap last- year he carried. 7st. 91b., and beat Tact, 7st. 61b„ by half a length. In this year' 6 event Downham has Bst„ and Tact, 7st. 41b. Bimeter, which is now awarded Bst. 61b., was third under 7st. Sib. When contesting the Somerton Handicap at Eakaia on Saturday, Federal got off the course, and came down. ' His ridflr, the well-known amateur horseman, Mr. H. T. Smith, sustained. a _ broken collarbone and other minor injuries. •Amongst the latest recruits to answer their country's call are three well-known Eiccarton horsemen, in E. Ward and W. Jcukinson, both of Lonsdale Lodge, and D. E. Anderson, who was attached to Hurray Hobbs's - stable.
