OBSCENE LANGUAGE

Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over the JLigistrate's Court yesterday, to deal with police cases., Herbert Sclrutz was charged with drunkenness, and with having used obscene language. The evidence showed that ho persisted in interfering with .some cadets, who wero drilling in Jervois Quay on Monday night. When taken away by an officer with, the cadets, he used the language, complained of, and was given in charge. For drunkenness he was convicted and discharged, and for using obscene language was fined 405., in dofault fourteen days' imprisonment. HAZARDS PLAYER FINED £5. What appeared to bo a game of "hazards, '\inaulged in by from eight to twenty men on the Railway Wharf, was witnessed by two constables on Monday afternoon. As a result one man, Chas. Henry. Lawson, was yesterday chargedtinder the Police Offences Act with being a rogue and .a vagabond, in that he played a game of "hazards." On the application of Mr. P. W. Jackson the charge was amended to one of playing "hazards," and taken under' the Gaming Act. To this ehargo accused pleaded not guilty. The evidenco of the constables was that when they appeared the men ran away. Accuscd was seen to be throwing tho dice,' and money was alleged to. have been passed. The accused was the only man arrested. Mr. Jackson contended that there was no proof that dice wero being used, and' accused swore that he did not take part in any unlawful game, and did not run away. His Worship entered a conviction, and fined accused £5, in default one month's imprisonment. AN UNFORTUNATE WOMAN. ■ An elderly woman, whose main fault was that she could not keep away from drink, answered to a charge of drunkenness, and to being a rogue and a vagabond, in that she had insufficient lawful means of support. The accused, Mary Sprowell, said that she was subject to fits, and she could not get any 'employment. She admitted a previous conviction as an idle and disorderly person. On the first ehargo a sentence .of ono month's imprisonment was imposed, and on tho second she was senj tenced to six months' imprisonment. OTHER CHARGES. I Bartholomew Mahoney was fined 20.9., in default three days' imprisonment', for drunkenness, and John Carolan was similarly dealt with for committing an indecent act. A first offender for drunkenness was convicted and dis, charged. Ohas. Menzies was remanded for sentence for deserting from tho s.s.
