ENEMY TRADE IN PACIFIC
"POLICY TOO TOLERANT."
Tho question of German trade in the was the subject of further representations by Mr. E. Anderson, president of the Auckland .Chamber of Commerce, to the Prime Minister during the latter's visit to Auckland. Mr. Anderson stated to a "Herald" reporter yuat he had interviewed the Prime Minister regarding the operations of the large Hamburg firm, commonly known as the D.H.I and P.G.
"While fully appreciating tho improvement made by tho appointment of ,a receiver to take over the company's affairs in Samoa," said Mr. Anderson, "I regret that the position in Tonga is apparency unchanged. Tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce has all along been aware that the question of enemy ■ trading in Tonga is a matter for the Imperial authorities to deal with, and in its communications with the Prime Minister the Chamber has merely suggested that the New Zealand Government. or preferably the Dominion and the Commonwealth Governments, should lorcibly : place tho position before the Imperial authorities. We can only hope that our efforts in the matter may be the means of bringing about a change in the policy, which, in the opinion of my Chamber, has been and continues to be tolerant almost to the point of absurdity."
