THE CALL FOR MEN

CITY'S ANSWER

LOWER RATE OF ' UNFITNESS

EXTRA MEN FOR CAMP

STRAICHT NOTE TO A.S.C. AND AMBULANCE CANDIDATES.

Recruiting' is proceeding steadily in Wellington, .though- the week's returns are about .100 less than they were a month'or so. back. Last ..week/193 men enlisted in the City. -The majority signed on for the infantry, and the percentago of unfitness was much lower than tho rate, that has ;■ obtained' of kite. Lately, forty per' cent.; of rejections has been common j '.last week only 21.7 were turned down, and some of those can be mado good! '-r K ' . ■ The figures for tlie week were:— Fit. ; 151' •' ' Temporarily unfit 10 - Unfit ....: 32 > Total enlistments 193 Two of the recruits were under age. • Men enlisted for arrus of the service as under:—■, Infantry : 107 Mounted 23 ' Artillery 20 Ambulance • 11 Engineers 11 : A.SiC. v 10 Others ■; 12 . .Total' ..' 193 Policy with A.S.C. and Ambulance [ Recruits. Oil the. boiks of the Wellington Recruiting.'Office and tho books of other recruiting offices are numerous recruits wlio have enlisted' and stated a preference for branches of the service in which not many men aro required. The Army Service Corps has leen a favourite branch, and Ambulance has secured heavy enlistments. Recently figures' published .in The Dominion showed that apparently there were, enough A.S.C. men' oil. the Wellington books to last us for two years. Shortly after that the Defence Minister stated that it.had been decided to practically close down on enlisting, men for that arm of. the. service, and since then only specially qualified'men have been accepted by the recruiting officers.

' While there are all these A.S.O. arid Ambulance men on our waiting -list, rrieri are needed; for the infantry and the mounted arms, and it is understood that A.S.O. and 'Ambulance candidates are to be. notified' that they may transfer to the 1 /infantry or mounted, or bo removed from, the books. If all the men in question 'submit to the transfer the more-important branches will be augmented, by. several hundreds.
