NOTES AND, COMMENTS
IBy Ole.n'coe.l
The Ashkurst-Pohangina Meeting will take place on Wednesday. A big attendance of the public is expected at the clubs opening meeting, and excursion tares have been arranged for visitors from the different lines.
, special meeting of the Poverty Bay Trotting Club was held last week to consider the advisability of closing down during the war. The president (Dr. C. F. hcott) was strongly in favour of .fclie proposal, but after some discussion his motion was lost, and he thereupon tendered his resignation "for the duration of the war.
j r :,?• ,J", Watts. horse Mountain cm I .' , broke his shoulder when ho tell ill the Melbourne Cup, is still under veterinary treatment, and an effort will be made to save him for the stud. Black Lupin and Lady Edith, trained by L. W. Watson at Awapuni, are getting through some useful work. Both horses claim engagements at the Asliliurst meet•mg next Wednesday. The Hororata Racing Club has received very good nominations for its annual meeting, to bo held on December 4. There are sixteen engaged in tho Hororata Cup, including Snapdragon, Findhorn, and Margarine, each of whom won a race ati ißlccarton at the New Zealand Oup Meeting, and other good performers such as Peronula, Wishful, Countess Tolstoi, Mult 2 1? Parvo ' Gnome > and Hap Dha. If the double market is any criterion, square Deal will be a hot favourite for the Ash hurst Cup on Wednesday. Mr. D. Eraser's horse was suffering from a bruised heel at Trentham, but if 'he has got over this he should make a bold showing amongst the poor lot he. will meet at Ashhurst.
u ? r - was P u t U P f° r auction during the Blenheim meeting, but ras passed in. Later oil he was secured by Mr. \V. Rose, of Blenheim, who gave 65gns. for the Signahnan gelding. Mr. Rose formerly own-c-d several horses in ,T. Tapp's stables, one of whom, Daunton, was burnt to death in a fire on tho West Coast. A southern writer mentions that Kaminohe is to be sent to the West Coast meetings at Christmas and the New YeaT. The Hymettus gelding should easily pay his way on the Coast. The well-known horseman R. Hatch has been engaged to ride Rewi Pobo in the Cheltenham Handicap at Takapuna on Wednesday. The locally-owned Wiolotta scored in the President's Handicap, two miles, at the Marlborough Trottiiig Club's meeting on Friday, bu/t he had to undergo the ordeal of a protest before getting the stake.
If Mossman succeeds in winning tho Melrose Handicap, five furlongs, at Takapuna,. he will probably not be brought to Feilding, for he will be unable to start in the Aorangi Trial Plate. Should he fail at Takapuna he will be a hot favourite for the Trial at Feilding, which is a set weight (7st. 71b.) race, and the Auckland handicapper has awarded him 9st. in a hack race at Takapuna.' R. J. Mascfa will probably leave Lyttelton on Thursday for Feilding with Bimeter, who is engaged in the Feilding Stakes and' Oroua Stakes. The Maltster horse can gallop very fast, and he is pretty well, so that ho may win a race before hp returns home,
Several of Sir George Clifford's horses were engaged at tho Feilding meeting next week, but none of them will be sent north.
By winning the big handicap at t'ho Warwick Farm meeting on Saturday, Toa Tere made some amends for bis failures nt tho big Itandwick fixture. The class seen out now is not as strong as the Jfaniapoto gelding raced against at lianclwick. Claude Inimer, the runner-it]), is trained by the ex-New Zealander, T. Wil-, llama.
