POULTRY INDUSTRY

(By Chantecleb.) ■ The North American Test. ■ Tho following is taken from Mr. L. V. P. Turner's report for September, of tho North American Test, and makes good reading:—

Lady Eglantine is tlio name of the Wliite Leghorn pullet Hint smashed all records in egg-laying contests, making her truly wonderful score on the grounds of tho Delaware College Agricultural Experiment Station, Newark, Del., in the Fourth Philadelphia North American International Egg-laying Competition. On Sunday, September 26, 8.30 a.m.. this .three and eight-tenths pounds of feathers, jflesh- and cackle laid her 287 th egg in 330 ;days, accomplishing in that time n mark ono egg higher than her predecessors in egg production had in 3G5 (lays. .And she is going to become, in the five weeks that remain of the competition year, the world's, most famous layer, for there is overy'. reason why she should continuo her capabilities. ; Since breaking the world's egglaying record, Lad'y Eglantine has laid fivo eggs, bringing her . total to 292, up to Saturday night, October 2. . 'Bred , from laying strains' by breeders seeking the best there .is in egg production, this pullet is the very essonce of scientific effort, with so much in her of/all that makes for egg laying that nothing save an accident, or the process of Nature, can stop her activities.. When a . new suit of feathers becomes necessary, with which she may battlo the rigors of winter, she will stop.

For maiiy weeks this layer, No. 5 in Pen 62, Eglantine Farm, had regularly laid six or ■ seven esgs; in the remainder of her official test, until sundown, October 31, should she lay only half as many as in tho past five weeks, her score will reach 303 eggs in 365 days, an. unheard of feat. Without a sign of moulting, '.with a splendid constitution, full of live and health,, the usual rate of yield will, in all probability continue and Lady Eglantine will justly possess the highest honours ever coming to any egg layer anywhere. Leaders in the Pen Score. The Eglantine Farm entry now leads the Fourth 'Philadelphia North American International Egg-lnying Competition with a total score of 1138 eggs, a lead of 49 eggs over Pen 63, English Leghorne, with a score 0f.1089. The highest score made in previous competitions was in the second, when Tom Barron's pen laid 1190 eggs. This is 42 eggs distant from Pen 62; 30 days will complete the yeaT, and it,is reasonably certain that the Barron scare will be reached by Pens 62 arid 63. In the case of the first pen a weekly average of S 3-5 eggs is required; Pen 63,.requiring an average of 201-5 eggs each for the remaining five weeks. Bird No. Y in Pen 69, is expected to reach, second individual place with a 6Core around 270. eggs. Notwithstanding the slight .deficit in egg yield in- this year's competition, a matter of over 2000 eggs less than last year, .a splendid showing -in pen and individual records will be made, many pens going over '000 eggs for the five merrfberM and quite a few individuals that will lay over 250 eggs.

Several pens will have two or more layers with records about 200 eggs eaoli. In tho present the .fast seven weeks of the official year will show higher weekly scores than last year, increasing slightly the general .yield for the 365 days and bringing it nearer the splendid yield secured in the third competition, 170 eggs for each bird average. While the first year of the competition showed a yield of 1301 oggs in the 47th week the second year, 1216 eggs in the same. week, and tho third year a vield of 1070 'eggs, the corresponding week this year shows, 1129 eegs. which slight rain will continue, probably, until the 52nd week closes. ■ '• Nino individuals laid perfeot scores in ths week, quite an unusual performance for so'late in the season. Pen 99 led all other pens in weekly output with 28 eggs, Pen 69 followed with 27 eggs, and third place.went to Pen 18 with 25 eggs. Brisk' Contest Is On. There is quite a race on Jss monthly high score between Pens 9 and 69," Pen •69 haying won the silver , medal for monthly high score four successive, months; so far these two pens aro only an egg or two apart, and both have been laying at an almost even Tate. _ Between pens for first plaoe, the difference in .totals is rather-, close, and moulting will control tho final Tesnlt. Pen 62 has suffered to' some extent through this annual feather productive process, and Pen 63 has just begun. N.Z. UTILITY POULTRY CLUB'S ' COMPETITIONS.
