Thoro were 162 applica,tion3 from all parts of tlie South Island, and soino from tbo North Island, for the position of raJigor to the Southland Acclimatisation Society, and Mr. John Devoy Ballantyne was appointed. A large number of applications were from men apparently eligible and fit for activo service at the front._ It was resolved to return these without consideration, the applioants to bo informed of..tho reason.,
