RUSH FOR PERMITS
FOR SYDNEY "IN THE MEANTIME." There was something of a rush for permits at the Internal Affairs Department yesterday by 111011 who wish for' different reasons to leave New Zealand. Many are anxious to leave by the Sydney boat to-day, but as ever}' application has to bo investigated before' a permit is issued, it is highly probable that many of them will miss their steamer. Altogether about fifty men asked to be supplied with application forms, and about a dozen wore (ro<uincd filled in. Pour permits were granted, the reasons being dqemed sufficient They were for young men who wero geoig to Australia under contract. The shipping companies aro requiring intending passengers to produce permits before tlisy will issue tickets, but oven if a man does procure a ticket without providing himself with a permit, the mere possession of a ticket does not entitle him to leavo New Zealand, and does not relievo tho shipping comijauios from responsibility for preventing tho man from boarding an out-ward-bound ship. A mail who works his passage is not exempt from tho regulation, but no permit neod be obtained by any man joining the crow of an outward-bound ship provided'he is receiving tho full rato of pay. The men who have applied for permits aire mostly bound for Sydney in the meantime, and it is said that some of tho eases aro not satisfactory.
