HEEDING THE CALL
MEN FOR THE WAR \ NEW FORCE MOW GATHERING CITY MEN'S MARCH CHEERED IN THE GALE AND RAIN. The mobilisation at Trentham camp of tho Tenth Reinforcements ha-s commenced. Tho men from Taranaki began the influx by trudging cheerily into camp yesterday morning. Shortly before noon the men from Wellington City and suburbs joined them. Others are following fast upon their heels, and before the week is much older tho Tenth will bo all in and settled down, and their training will have been started. The gathering of the City quota at the Garrison Hall yesterday morning was a hurried and hustled affair. The men were on the spot at 8 a.m., and tho calling of the roll was commenced with little delay. There were a. dozen or so absentees, and in an hour and a half tho actual roll was ready, and soon after that all was prepared for tho march to the railway station en routo to Trentham. Tho new recruits set off at about 10 o'clock, headed by the Fifth Regiment Band. A gale blustered down from the north, and a thick rain drove along before it. Wind and Wot notwithstanding, the men wore as cheerful a draft ah ever marched off from the Garrison Hall to war, via Trentham. Many woro overcoats, but those who didir't merely looked the happier for their omission.
Familiar martial music sounded down Taranaki Street, and in a while doorways, windows, and pavements wero burdened with people waving and shouting 6omo form .of "Kia ora." Into Cuba -Street the column swung, 'and there it was heartily cheered. Crowds were waiting in Manners Street, Willis Street, and on the Quay, but they were disappointed, for the usual course was abandoned, and the way chosen was tlio shortest ono to Te Aro Station. To Aro is nearer than Lambton, and it was raining hard. Courtenay Place was not expecting a march, but mustered its forces rapidly, and extended a hearty send-off. The recruits are physically a very fine lot, and aro mostly well-matured men. The proportion of immature youths in their ranks was small. Judging by appearances, most of them havo done hard work, and they look as if they will take but a very little while to get fit in camp. Ono recruit took his concertina with him, and whon the band was temporarily out of action he filled in the programme with "Tipperary." This musical soldier will bo 'an acquisition ■ in camp, and may even enliven the proceedings in the trenchcs. Some day wo may read of his baring emulated Piper Findlator, the Highlander, who, though shot through the legs, piped his regiment on to victory whon the heights of Dirgai woro boing stormed.
Of all those in ' tho Tanks, none marched . more proudly than a short, middle-aged ivom'an, who, quito evidently, hud a son amongst the recruits. Walking valiantly through the rain and tho mud and tho wind, and striving gamely to maintain a pace that was sot a slmdo too fast for hor, she contrived, with tlio aid of an occasional sprint), to keep in lino. She marched right on to tho station platform, aaul there was lost amongst the crowd. Thorp wore hasty good-byos at tho tram-side,'some of them rather pathetic. Tho men in general looked as gay as a crowd of picnickers.
The following table shows t'lie number of men who went in, alongside the quota called for:— Sent to Short- SwrQuota. Camp. age. plus.
