THE FAVOURITE BRANCHES. ' TOO MANY MEN ENLISTED. When recruits register their names As volunteers for service with tho Expeditionary Force they aire; allowed to state in what- branch of the service they wish to serve. Hitherto it has been tho practice to' give men free choice, but this rule is to be modified in future. It is' common knowledge that many more men than are likely to be required for months havo enlisted for certain branches, especially the Army Service Corps and Field 1 Ambulance, while men are needed for the infantry and mounted rifles. The''Defence Minister informed a Dominion reporter yesterday that. tho •Department mfended to stop enlistment lin - the Ambulance and Army Service , Corps, and perhaps in others, for which more men had enlisted than would bo required for some time. Tho Minister said that this measure would be temporary, and might never be applied absolutely to such branches of thei service as the Engineers and tho-'Artillery. Tradesmen were required for the En.gineers, and tie men could''not bo trained fully by the military. He thought, therefore, that tradesmen offering for tho Engineers were likely to bo acceptod oven ,if the lists far this branch were full for the time being. Men for the Artillery could'be trained l in oarnp, but the. Department' preferred to take men who knew something about guns and who had had somo previous training. TIME OTHER. METHODS WERE , USED. ffij {TeleffTaßh—Pre?* Association.* Wanganui, November 16. Speaking to recruits leaving for Trentham this morning, Mr. Yeitoli, M.P., congratulated the district on the patriotism displayed by its young men. The proportion of those who had volunteered had not been exceeded by any other part of the Dominion. He referred to tho shocking , failure in the South Island, particularly in Otago, to fulfil honourable obligations, and said it was tirno the Government used other methods.
