CATHOLIC WOMEN'S HOSTEL

For some time past tho question of establishing a Catholic Hostel for women arriving or residing in Wellington lias engaged the attention of tho Catholic Immigration Committee and of the Wellington Diocesan Council of the New Zealand Catholic Federation. A subcommittee, composed of representatives from these bodies ; was sot up to report as to tho possibilities and requirements of such an institution. The - offorts of this sub-cuminittee have, been successful, and both Archbishop Redwood aim Archbishop O'Siiea have approved tho committee's course of action, and have •intended thereto their hearty support. The appeal for funds has resulted in over thirty ladies and gentlemen signifying thoir willingness to act as guarantors for tihe proposal, and already cash subscriptions to the amount of £150 have been received, which will,-however, need to bo considerably augmented. The following comprise the Trust Board of Management: Mr. John Duggan (chairman), His Grace Archbishop O'Shea, Mesdames Cornish and B. Ellis," Misses Flannery and Whcelor (lion, secretary), Mr. Mart-in Kennedy. K.S.G., Mr. M. O'Connor, Major Halpin, Mr. T. B. Dwan, Mr. J. A. Corry, and Mr. R. Sievers (hon. treasurer). That convenient residence, with grounds, known as "The Knoll," situated at 33 Thompson Street, has been secured as the hostel building. It is intended to open tho hostel early in December, and already numerous applications for residence have been received by the hon. secretary, Miss Wheeler, Wellington College, Wellington. Enthusiastic co-oi>cration has greeted this new departure into Catholic social work, but there is still plenty of r.cope for willing helpers.
