NATIONAL SERVICE.
Sir, —Is it not time to do away with such terms as "conscription" and "compulsory service,", when, considering out national duty with respect to tho war, and to substitute for these terms that name of "national service" so long and so wisely given to this matter by the' "Spectator"? ."Conscription," "compulsory service"—the very names "put.,up tho back" of many of us; but call it by its true name of "national service," and many a young and old man will see more clearly where duty lies. .National service for a national danger, say II 't is good logic, sound sense, the only thing possible ana right. As Mr. Lloyd l George in his preface to his War speeches says; "If tho nation hesitates when the need is clear to take the necossary' steps call forth its manhood to • defend honour and existence .... then 1 can see no hope." Ha spoke thus primarily with reference to industrial organisation. for war purposes; tho words are true equally in their relation to the furnishiug of men iu this conflict.—l mm, etc., GRACE FOX. Dunedin, November 11.
