ABOUT 300,000 CARDS RETURNED

SUCCESS ALMOST ASSURED

The fears entertained in official as wel las in other quarters that the National Register might not be a success owing to a very largo number of men negleoting to return their schedules have turned out to bo groundless. The Registrar had in hand yesterday 250,000 cards and he liad advice that about 50,000 more ivoro in the Post Office. This means that although the number of defaulters may be considerable, it should not be so largo as to destroy the value of the war consus. It was estimated before the register was taken that tho number of men in New Zealand of registration age was about 300,000.
