FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT. 'An inquest was held at the Hospital yesterdays before Mr. D. G. A.. Cooper, S.M., into the death of Ernest H. 01 ay, a railway porter, who met with pri accident at Petono station on Friday last; Evidence wais by _ several wit-, nesses that' Clay was going to cross the line, and lie apparently failed to observe'tlie down Wairarttpa train m time to iavoid the acoident. He was knocked down by the engine, and fell between the "train and > the platform, and fiiistaitied serioiiS injuries. He mto to the Hospital, where he died thd next day. Dr. G. B. Isdale gave evidence oe to the. injiu-ies received by deceaafed, and .said that death was due to heart failure, following on shock caused by tile injuries. ■ A verdict to this effect was passed, the Coroner adding tliat no blame was attachable to anyone. THROWN OFF THE TRAIN. '• While travelling by the 8.20 p.m. train froni Wellington to Petone yesterday, Mr. R. Mothes, of Pqtone, who was standing on the platform of one of tho barriagos, was thrown.off the train about four diains on the south side of Petouo station. Mr. Mothes was promptly carried to.the porters' roots, whero his in--jurids were attended to by Dr. Harding. Mr. Mothes was very much bruised and shaken, but is not seriously injured. Thomas Edward Eaton, aged 27, a singlo inan, was accidentally killed at Lic'fifiold, near -, Putaruru, yesterday morilirig by falling imder a disc harrow he was driving.
