OUR WOOL SUPPLIES
NO PROPOSAL TO COMMANDEER. A rumour has been ourrent recently that the Government intends to commaiideer all crossbred wool. This is not correct. ' There is no proposal to buy all our crossbred wool after any method similar to that now adopted respecting _ meat. Probably the report takes origin from the fact that there.i is an arrangement between the Gov-' ornment and the wool-broking firms that wool required for the manufacture of equipment for our troop's shall be obtainable at market rates. The Minister of Munitions and Sup-, plies' (the Hon. A. M. Myers) stated yesterday that the -woollen;. mills who had .undertaken to supply tho Defence 'Department- until the end of next year with equipment would have .to purchase from 12,000 to 13,000 bales of wool. But-the purchase _ of this , quantity, which was not considerable by comparison with New Zealand's total production, should not make any appreciable difference in the price obtainable at the local sales, which price would be governed as usual by world-wide conditions. The relatively small needs of the military authorities could not in any way influence-the position.
