CITY CRICKET
A DAY FOR THE BOWLERS POOR SHOWING BY 'VARSITY. The Wellington Club cricket championships were continued 011 Saturday, when the second match of the season was commenced by tho respective teams. The heavy rain experienced during the night had niado the wickets somewhat dead, and in the city play was not of a lively nature. . East met Central at the Basin* Reserve, and going 111 first made a total of 183, of which J1 Gin- (A3) and Midlane (37) wero the principal contributors. For Central, Wilson again came out on top in tho bowling average, with six wickets to his crcdit for 43 runs. Central went to the wickets to try to reach their opponents' total, but when stumps were drawn had only got 101 to their credit for the loss of eight wickets, and so their chances of a first innings' victory aro not rosy. Ilickson (2S) and Dind (18) were the highest scorers. M'Girr took five wickets for 33 runs.
University and Old Boys also met at the Basin lieserve. 'Varsity went to the wickets first, and made but a poor showing, the whole sido being dismissed for 51 runs, of which Birch contributed 22, aud Ward, the only other double-figure scorer, 10. Tucker had a nioe bowling average nf six wickets for 19 runs, and Marris took three for 10. Old Boys had no difficulty in passing the score of their opponents, and at 6.30 p.m. had 222 ((runs for sevon wickets. Beeohey played a good game for 81, and Lambert batted well in compiling 50. Howe was very successful behind . the wickets.
On account of the slips and washouts on the railway lino north of Lower Hutt the Trentham Camp senior cricket team was unable to travel to the Lower Hutt to fulfil their engagement with the Hutt Seniors in their cup match. A scratch match was played between. Hutt Senior and Hutt Junior with the assistance of Bennett,Sandman, and Judd, of the Trentham team. The juniors were successful in defeating their opponents by 04 runs to 34. For the winners Sandman. niado 24 and Bennett 11. Tho firstnamed hit three fours and a six. Bennett took four wickets for 12 runs and Sandman six wickets for 13 runs. Petona registered 115 runs for seven wickets in the first innings against North, who scored 92. A feature of the gams was the bowling of Brice and Smyrk, tho former securing six wickets for 86 runs, 24 overs and 12 maidens. Details of the scores are as follow:— EAST V. CENTRAL'.
