LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

RECRUITING. Sir.,—Regarding the continual shortage of men for the Reinforcements, I think it is about timo that the young ladies of Wellington took it upon "themselves to consider it their duty to do a little recruiting on their own. Let every girl think it ovor. What must tho girls who have boys at tho front think of those who go about with men —socalled—who are waiting to be conscripts'. Not much, I am afraid. I would suggest that every girl should make herself a recruiting ageut, and let every young man know what she thinks an this respect about shirkers. Those men who shirk their duty at tho present time are of no good to any one, and I pity the girl who should have anything; to do with them at any time, for if tliev shirk their duty now they will do the same at all times. Such men are not any good to any country. I am sure if.the girls considered this point, and used their influonce, we would not «»p so maiiy able-bodied men walking about.

.-uiooiier thing I wish to say in writing: Why are so many strong, eligible unmarried men kept at our local group depot, and ill the Headquarters Staff department at Trentham and other places? These young men are drawing largo wages, being . raised to ' the rank of sergeants, quartermasters, and ser-geant-majors, and have never put in a day's _ drill the w'holo time they havo been in camp. I am. writing here with full knowledge of what I know to be true. Some of these young men have been in Trentham camp for months, and go about with their stripes as ir they owned tho place. I think something should bo done to make such men as' those realise their position. There are plenty of married men,- trained at that, with clerical and storo work experience, ■ who would fill these positions, and would be glad to accept the work at the rate of wages theso young men are. gotting. It is married men with families who should be put in these positions, who would do tho work better, in every way. Trusting someone more able than I will take this matter up,—l am, etc., NOT A SHIRKER.' Trentham.
