Mr. Leslie AY. A. Macarthur, F.G.S.. a geologist who has over a long period made a close study of the mineralogy of New Zealand, is at present in AVel-lingt-on. Ho is tho author of several publications and scores of newspaper articles on' practical prospecting, <m commercial minerals, and other topics rao.'G or loiß associated with mining.Ho it was who discovered schc-elite, the first over discovered in this country, at Wakn-marina, .Marlborough, in 1890. Ho went to the field to report on the gold reefs, and lie reported strongly, against tho gold prospects, but he attached a good deal of importance to_ the scheelito deposits. Now there is little gold-digging in the AVakamarina district, but the scheelito is being worked. Tho ■ deposits were not exploited, however, until eleven years after they were first discovered. His theory about the disease differs from the generally hold one thaft the lungs become atrophied or destroyed because of the presence of rock dust in the air passages.
