VOUNG HERO OF THE BATTLEFIELD
FRENCH BOY WHO HAS WON THE AVAR CROSS. The "Journal" relates a. story of the youngest French soldier, wlio has won: the war cross on the battlefield.. Gustavo Chaton, aged fourteen, left Foutainbleau in August of last year, and! tried to enlist. Being unable to do soi he followed two regiments of infantry, which wore leaving Seijlis, and contrived to stay with them until tlioy arrived in Alsace. There ho hid himself un-< til ho had a chance of fighting for himself.
He took part in the Marne and Aisne battles and at Fontenoy. Despite the fact that ho was f-hot through the shoulder, ho managed to capture two Germans. As soon as ho was well again he fought in other battles, sustaining, a bad wound in the knee.
Gustavo, who is just out of Brest Hospital, was mentioned in a General Army Ordor, and now has been awarded the war cross. M. Millerand, the War Minister, however, has decided that lie is too young to fight, and has accordingly sent him back to his family.—Exchange.
