GIFTS FOR THE MEN OF THE NAVY

It is rather depressing to think that so small a response has been the result of the appeal made for canned fruits and vegetables for. the sailors' on the Pyramus, the Philomel, and the Pioneer: So far only twenty people have responded to this appeal, and yet the people in New Zealand owe their freedom, their safety, and their peace of mind to the work of the Navy—and to that only—not to Kitchener's Army or to_ any other force which Britain can raise. The work that is being done by those men-of-war is not one that appeals to the imagination, because it js all done so unostentatiously, so out of the public eye, and yet it is .this very quietness that has made it so effective, and therefore so likely to bo overlooked. The bluejackets are doing outpost duty in one of the hottest portions of the world, and it is only with a plentiful change of diet, with a good supply of vegetables and fruits that they can be kept in good health. It would be a very surprising and a very humiliating thing if the people in New Zealand were to overlook the needs of our sailor men at Christmas time, considering all that we owe to the men of

"The_ Silent Navy," and it is so little that is asked for. Contributions should bo addressed to Lieutenant Nimmo, care Nimmo and Co.'s Piano Warehouse, Kent Terrace.
