MAORI DESERTERS

Six members of the Second M&ori Contingent- were chargcd before the District Court-Martial with desertion, and with losing by neglect portions of their kits. - Evidence against two of the prisoners was heard.' It was to the effect that the! week prior to the'departure of the contingent, they left camp for their homes at Wanganui and Mangere respectively arid were aivay for nearly a month .before they 'were apprehended by tlio civil police. One pleaded in extenuation that his mother persuaded him to desert, while the other said he wont, away to attend to his sick wife, and he did not intend to desert. The two men were found guilty of the charges, but the sentences will not be made known until they are confirmed by the officer commanding the district.
