, TBI OI.KNCOB.I To-day will be,a gala day in Melbourne, for at Flemington the biggest handicap in Australia is to be decided. This is the Melbourne Cup, two mile% and as usual there will be a big field to contest the ,£BOOO stake. Final payments in connection with leading events at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting, and acceptances for minor events on the first day, must be made on Wednesday. Entries for all events at the Ashliurst meeting close to-night at 9 o'clock. Horses trained by the Napier mentor, A. Neale, filled the position of runnerup no fewer than five times at Gisborne last week. The Spring Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will open at Ellorslie tomorrow. when the Welcome Stakes, Guineas, and City Handicap will be decided. J. H. Prosser, with seven horses, and J. W. Lowe, with Chakwana and Seadown, were aboard the Maori, which sailed for Lyttelton last evening. Miraculous has been sold to Mr. W. Smart, and is to bo trained by H. ICingan at Trentham. At .£IOO the mare was not dear and properly placed should soon repay her owner. "Wager" is informed that Specialform won the Midsummer Handicap, one mile and a half, at Kiccarton,' in February this year. Although he has not had a race for nearly twelve months, the 4-year-old Mullingar (B. Deeley) is certain to be well supported in the City Handicap at Ellerslie to-morrow. A well performed 4-year-old with only 7st. 101b. to carry 6hould bo capable ,of getting a good ten furlongs. Eligible, 7st. 31b., should also run well. Considering that he is well seasoned with racing, Marco Bello should have a big advantage over his opponents in the Great Northern Guineas. The black colt Ivas showing up boldly at a mile in the Pearce Handicap at Trentham, and on that form must be very dangerous in the 8-year-old event to-morrow. Hyllus is tile only Southern 2-year-old with any pretentions to form, tliat will contest the A.11.C. Welcome Stakes. Tho Kararnu gelding is not by any means first •class, and-it will come, as no surprise ..to find Lady Jack, winner of the Avondale Stakes, finishing in front of him. Lady Jack will be ridden by Deeley and Hyllus' by J. Buchanan. Reputation did not contest the Melbourne Stakes on Saturday, so evidently Trainer F. M'Grath did noti think lie irtfnted a race to top off his Cup preparation. Tho Martian' liorse is not by any moans well treated, and in the big field ho may not be seen at'his be6t. Tho Trentham' light-weight, B. Eced, has gone north to ride Eligible in the City Handicap at Ellerslie. The Caulfield Cup, won by Lavendo, was worth .£4OOO to the owners of the winner. Tho imported horse could have been purchased five minutes before tho race for 3000 guineas, so it was a lucky thing for his owners that tho deal did not eventuate. . The Hawke's Bay-owned filly, Tinkler, who was sent north to contest the A.B.C. Welcome Stakes, injured herself while running in the paddock, through coming in contact with a stone wall, and is not likely to be seen out at the meeting. • The.
