TOWN HALL SEATS
COMFORT IN THE GALLERIES. At length the City Council has decided to mako at least a partial improvement in the seating accommodation in the galleries of the Town Hall. In the past and at present the seats, both in tho galleries and ground floor, are Austrian chairs, fastened together with battens, for the convenience of removal. Such chairs are quite good when a person only lias to sit on them for a comparatively short time, but when, as often occurs, an entertainment in the Town Hall lasts for over two hours, the seats are anything but comfortable. For a start tho council has decided to reseat the galleries with upholstered tip-up seats on iron standards. Such seats can hardly bo provided on tho ground floor owing to the great difficulty that would bo experienced when the floor has to lie cleared for a dance, as is frequently the case in the winter months. Tenders for the new seats close at the Town Hall on November 11.
According to the specifications, the number of seats required will be 750, but tho exact number cannot be accurately determined until after the acceptance of the tender and approval of the sample seats. Tho seats are to measure not less than 20 inches in width from centre to centre. Tiiey are to bo of tho tip-up pattern, constructed _so that the seats may fall into position without noise. It is intended tliat the seats and backs shall be plainly upholstered in leather or approved material, with standards of cast-iron, securely fastened together and well secured to tho floors. No space exceeding 1 inch is to be left botween the seat and the back of same (an anti-kick clause), and the seats and backs may be framed of selected red pine free from imperfections. The whole of tho chairs are to be fixed in position within four months from the dato of tho acceptance of the tender. A feature that demands attention in resoating the galleries is to provide reasonable leg room between the seats of ono row and the backs of tho seats in front. In tho Boys' League match, Hufcfc Seniors v. St. David's, Potone, at the Recreation Ground, Lower Hutt, tho Hutt team will be —C. Baumber, H. Pole, P. Sullivan, R. Bowers, K. Baumber, C. Parrant, O. Mudgoway, 11. Cargell, G. Lusty, A. Chorlcy, R. M'Kay.
