The cablegram received from Monte Video concerning the mishap to tho barque Sator 16 of intercut to shipping people in New Zealand. The Sator is well-known in Lyttelton, where she spent over two months early this year.' She arrived at, Lyttelton on March 24. with a cargo of jarrah from Bueselton, West Australia, and sailed on June 1 for Te Kopuru, Kaipara, where sho loaded timber for Liverpool or London. She sailed from Kaipara on August 27, and probably encountered the ice between Gape Horn and the Falkland Islands. The Sator is an iron barque of 1226 tons gross register, owned by J. A. Henschlen, of Lillesand, Norway. She was formerly, tho British ship Eamock, under which name she visited Lyttelton In June, 1895. It is some vears since any vessel collided -with an iceberg in Cape) Horn latitudes, though there have been 6ome very-narrow escapes, principally of sailing vessels. . CONCERNING THE BABON CAWDOR. Advice' has been receivod that the Vacuum Oil Company's chartered steamer Baion Cawdor has boen Tinahle to negotiate tho Panama Canal on account of the slip in tho Calnbra Cut. Consequently she has been diverted to the Cape of Good Hope route. The vessel, which is coming from New York, loft Panama on October 6; and will, therefore, not arrive at Wellington till towards the end of December. Auckland will be Baron Cawdor's first port of call in these waters. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. Daniels joined the Moan a, at Sydney, as chief officer, relieving Mr. Ross, who has been appointed to tho command of tho Karitane (temporarily). Mr. D. A. Although a Press Association message stated tnat the Orari left Sydney-for Auckland on Thursday, tho local office of the F. and S. Line have been advised that the vessel did not get away till yesterday. She is bound from Liverpool, and is due here about November 9. About BOflO boxes of butter and 55C0 crates oT cheese will be brought to Wellington by the Corinna on Tuesday next from New Plymouth for transhipment to tho Turakina for London. Coal will be brought to Wellington from Greymouth iSy the Alexander to-morrow. She will sail for Nelson and West Coast ports on Tuesday next. The ICaitangata was to have left Melbourne on Wednesday last for Adelaide, where she will load salt and gypsum for New Zealand ports. From Auckland tho Physor will proceed on to Napier before coming on to Wellington. It is probable that the vessel will not make her appearance here before the end of next week. The A. and A. The Northern Company advise that from November 1 the Russell-'WhanKaroa-jrango-nui service will be reorganised. Prom that date there will be two steamers from Auckland to tho north cach week. The boat on Mondays will toko passcneerfi and cargo for Ru«boU and Opua only, and tho boat on Wednesdays will take passengers only for Eussell and Opua, and passengers and cargo for Whangaroa and Mangonui. The Aupouri will cbnimenco the new service at 4 p.m. on Monday, after which the Clansman . will take up her regular runninp* in tho service'. On completion of discharge of her timber at Sydney the Kaiapoi will proceed on to Newcastle to load New Plymouth and Picton. The Ranwtira, en Toute from London, Is expected to loave Auckland to-day.
