"A GREAT SEASON"

Most of the North Island farmers are optimistic, but men' from the South Island have grave fears for the immediate future.- .' A farmer who had'travelled up from the far south told a Dominion representative that in Southland and Southern Otago rain is very badly needed, and that great loss in crops must result if rain does not fall almost immediately. In tho grain-growing districts of Canterbury, ho says,., the position is extremely serious.. Everything . is very dry, and it is a lorjJ; while sinco good rain fell. He considers that unless they get rain there without much further delay there" will_'be practically a total failure of the grain crops. The'nows of Taranaki at the show was to the effect that all is well there. Portions of the Wairarapa have experienced useful rains this week, but the land further away from the ranges has not been so favoured, and 1 can do with much more water. One who has spent the last ten days touring the Wairarapa says, however, that the district is, on the whole, in very good condition, and has nothing to fear so far. An agricultural expert who travels New Zealand frequently states that, except for the portion of the South Island above referred to, everything is looking well, and he forecasts a great (season.
