ENTERTAINMENTS

HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE. Although the weather was unfavourable last evening the audience which attended His Majesty's Theatre was a large one. This was duo to the excellent programme presented. Home astonishing balancing ji'cats were executed by the Balancing Stevens. Their work is interspersed with a good deal of comedy. The Two Colliers performed some graceful dancing, and tho Jtusical Ibsons contributed an attractive turn. Miss Eugenie Boland, tho Queensland contralto, has a good repertoire of songs. Other talented artists who appeared included Archie Douglas, the Eclair Twins, Leonard Nelson, Billy Wells, and Pollard and Jackson. THE KING'S. The star picture'at the King's Theatre, "When It Strikes Home," by the World Film Corporation, is attracting much attention, and is considered by many to bo one of the best pictures of its kind that has been shown for some time. Free from melodramatic sensationalism, it deals with a powerful, yet a possible situation, in a logical, concise manner, and runs the gamut of human emotions from contempt for the easily-led drunkard to n deep sympathy for the results "after many days." .' Strongly pathetic, keenly dramatic,' well acted and produced, the picture cannot fail to arouse much enthusiasm. The other pictures shown ore also very good. A laughable farce-comedy, "When "Wifie Sleeps," with liiilie liceves nt tho top of bis form, and an extremely interesting study, "A. Trip np the Clyde," with views of battleships and destroyers, as well as more peaceful scenes and the latest European Gazette, completes a programme of all-round merit. The present programme will be shown throughout the week, and a, special attraction is promised for next week. EVERYBODY'S. Tho bright programme at Everybody's this week is attracting good i>'Ht=es. The sixth episode of the great dramatic_ serial, "The Million Dollar Mystery," is full of interest, and the exciting story is advanced a further step. Norton, the de-tective-reporter, ingeniously contrives to rescuo i'lorence and Jones li'om the n.achiuations of the gang. .Some magnificent photography is seen in this number, which is'known as "Tho Countess's Coaching Party." Tho beautifully coloured film, "Wifl'les i.l the Riviera," is not only n triumph of artistic beauty, but enables the prince of comedians to show to great, advantage. Some fine views of Britain s new army, a very nowsy Gazette, and an excellent forco-com«ly, "The .New Valet," shows Billie Reeves in _a congenial role. The programme will bo shown throughout tho week. EMPRESS THEATRE. "Woman and Wine," the sensational five-act drama, has had exceptional patronage since it was first screened at tho Empress Theatre in Willis Street on Monday last. Some of the scenes are very fine, and they give one a good idea of the night life in Paris prior to the war. Although "Woman and Wine" takes up tho greater part of tho programme, there are several other pictures of interest.

"DAMON AND PYTHIAS." All sessions at tho People's Picture Palace were crowded yesterday, when "Damon and Pythias" was repeated. Some idea of the magnitude of the production can be gained .from the fact that instead of one stage manager no fewer than twelve were in charge of some of tho big scenes in this great picture. Thousands of artists appear ill the battio scenes, and in "the great array at tlio games in honour of the victorious Pythias. Throughout the play runs a love story that has been handed down for nearly 2.100 years. The picture is now in its final week. "POTASH AND PERLMUTTER" NORTH ISLAND TOUR, "Potash and Perlmutter," the famous Hebrew comedy triumph, which enjoyed a run of two yeaTS in London and New York, eight weeks in Melbourne, and ten weeks in Sydney, will begin its New Zealand career under the J. C. Williamson, Ltd.,' management, at His Majesty's Theatre, Auckland, 011 November 9, after which it will bo presented at New Plymouth on November 18, at Hawerii on November l'J, at Wanganui on November 20, at Palmerston North on November 22, at Napier on November 23 and 24, at Hastings on November 25, at Masterton on November 20, and the Wellington season will begin 011 November 27. "Potash and Perlmmtter" is described as one of those delightful comedies not only rich in ingenuity of construction and originality of idea, but in dialogue as well. It is a clean, healthy, wholesome, honest dramatic effort. It is said that from the moment the curtain rises until its final fall the audience simply rocks witli laughter at Hie quaint and brilliantly humorous sayings of the two Jewish partners, and at tho screamingly funny situations with which the play teems. There is also a pretty love story, and the play brings out all the best traits of the Jew. "Potash and Perlmutter". is based 011 tho humorous "Yiddish" stories of Montague Glass, who dramatised it with the collaboration of Charles Klein, who went down with the Lusitauia. The box plans will be opened three days before the opening night in each town. "ELIJAH." The final rehearsal of the Royal Wellington Choral Society was held in the Town Hall last evening. At the conclusion Sir. Bernard Page congratulated both chorus and orchestra 011 the excellence of the practice. At 5 o'clock last evening there were over 1000 seats reserved at tho Bristol box office, and this is commercially encouraging, and it is pleasing also to anticipate a good performance of "Elijah," with such soloists as Mrs. G'ower Burns, Miss Mina Caldow.Mr. Martin Duff, Mr. John Prouse, and Master Roduey Pankhurst. The box plan will remain open till 5 o'clock to-night, where 3s. and 2s. seats can be reserved. The doors will be open at 7.15, nnd in order to avoid the usual crush at tho ticket-box a supply of one shilling tickets will be available at the Bristol to-day. The performance will conclude about 10.15. ,
