MUNICIPAL GOLF LINKS

TO BE OPENED ON SATURDAY. At 2 p.m. oil Saturday next tho new municipal golf links at Berhampore aro to bo opened formally by His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), who extends an invitation to all citizens to be present-. The history of tho establishment of tho new links dates back about four years, when Dr. Cameron was, as a- member of tho City Council, a warm advoeato of the provision of public golf links by the municipality, on tho same lines as exist in Glasgow and other places in Scot-laud and England. It was Dr. Cameron who pointed out that, tho City Corporation hold as a heritage a splendid belt of land which was lming monopolised by coarse growths of roiso and broom, and which could, wil.li a littlo thought, bo transformed into golf links and sporLs grounds. His persistent advocacy had tho result of the council deciding that steps should ho taken to ascertain the respective merits of sites available for a golf eonrso on I,ho Town Belt. For some reason l-ltn Berliamporo Hills, though tho lirst; site selected, was sot asido for a. time, and expert opinions wore invited on tho TCilbirnie (Town Belt) and Lyall liny nit.es, but finally it was decided I.lml Borliamporo offered the most mal.erinl advantages for public links. Under expert advico the links were planned, and llio worlc has been carried out t ndor l-hn supervision of tho Cit-y Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton), ;i devotee of tho game.
