THE RETURNING SOLDIERS

TRAVELLING FACILITIES FOR THE RELATIVES. Arrangements Jliavo been mado to 'give the next-of-kin of wounded soldiers returning by the Tofua and Willoelira free passes to Wellington to meet their relatives. This applies, of course, to North Island residents. People ill the South Island will meet their meu at Port Chalmers or Lyttelton.. It must, however, bo clearly understood that the returning men must travel to Auckland, or intermediate places where they live, on the Main Trunk or other lines, in the special trains that will bo arranged for tliein, and tho next-of-kin, who hold the free passes, will be allowed to travel with them on tho special.

The Defence Minister (tho Hon. James Allen) stated on Saturday that ho regretted that the issue of railway passes to returning sick aj)d wounded men to travel by any train, they might choose could* not be continued, as it had led to -unfortunate confusion, and was not fair to localities which had prepared receptions for tho men at their respective homes. From a medical point of view, also, it was advisable that the soldiers should bo sent as soon as possible to tho hospitals or convalescent homes to which they had been allotted. Tho men on the Tofua wlio live in the North Island will come by the ferry steamer to AVellington. It is difficult yet to say on what date they will arrive, but it will probably be either Wednesday or Thursday next. Tho AVillochra will travel herself from Port Chalmers to Lyttelton and Wellington, and the North Island men will be disembarked at Wellington and sent on by special trains. Tho boat will arrive hero probably by Tuesday week, but tliis is not definite. Definite information will be supplied as soon as possible. The Mayor has decided to accord the returned soldiers by the Tofua a welcojno at the Town Hall, as from the citizens, at 0.30 a.m. The hour is early, but is fixed ir. order to meet the wishes of the Defence Department, tiiat the men shall not be unduly detained in AVellington. The AVillochra's contingent of wounded will also arrive in AVellington early in tho morning, and will bo received by tho Mayor.
