CITY CRICKET
CUP MATCHES COMMENCE A DAY FOE THE BATSMEN CENTURY AT HUTT j Tho first of the season's senior cricket championship matches were commenced on Saturday afternoon, and some interesting play was witnessed. On tho Basin Reserve matters went rather in favour of tho batsmen. Fairly good scoring was done bv tho batting sides, and some good individual totals were registered. Trentham Camp sent a team in to meet East, and the match had reached a very interesting stage when stumps were drawn. Trentham made the very useful score of 215, of which two former representatives of Canterbury compiled over half— Hickmott 55, Sandman 56. Trentham were (on the day) not worth 215, but unaccepted catches helped them on their way. East was weak in bowling. M'Girr bore tho burden of the attack, and got six wickets for 49 runs. However, 215 is a score which has often taken considerable beating in two-days' fixtures. Gibbes and Baker have mado a good start for East, and in the hour they had at tho wickets reeled off 104 runs without loss. The other match on the central' ground was between North and Old Boys. Old batted first, made a. very good showing, and North seem to be in a position from which they will find it no easy task to win. There was no heavy individual scoring, but the total mounted to 216, and North'have already lost throo good wickets for 95. Of the 95 Hiddleston, who appears to be in excellent form, contributed 4-2 not out.
The Lower Hutt team playing against Central at Lower Hutt opened tlie season well, for although thev went in for first hit with two men short they succeeded in.knocking up the respectable total of 222. Patten distinguished himself by making 104 not out, and Hughes also put on 40. The two men woro associated for a long time, and their partnership added 88 to the score. Patton was in for just under _ three hours, and he made his century in two hours and a half, not by rapid scoring, but by careful play. A chance was given by him before he reached ten, but from then on his display was almost faultless. Hughes shaped nicely, and scGred with considerable freedom. In liho final eight minutes of the afternoon Central opened their innings with Wilson and Paterson, and when stumps were drawn had fifteen runs to their credit, with no wickets down. . Dind, three wickets for 36 runs, was the most successful bowler, but the bowling as a whole was not strong. Playing against University, Petone ran up 218 in -the firpt innings. University are three down'for 13.
