"GETTING IT IN THE NECK"

■A! French newspaper relates the following story of an incident at Capo Helles, in which two British officers figured. "M. Poulot, director of supplies to the French Forces, was at the entrance to his tent when a saw a shell fall beside two .horsemen on the beach, burying them in dust. 'Two more of our good friends got it in the neck,' remarked a companion sorrowfully. "A few moments afterwards the English director of supplies was announced. His khaki uniform was much more so.iled than is usually tho case with our immaculate Allies, even in the firing line. But the wind was blowing so hard that it might have explained to some extent tho officer's neglige. At any rate no reference was made to shells or perils, and the Englishman spoke with customary sangfroid. "After the interview M. Poulot accompanied his English colleague to his horse, and was surprised to see the animal had a deep wound in the' back. 'Then it was you,' he exclaimed, 'that the shell burst near just now, and you said nothing about it.' 'Yes,' replied tho officer with imperturbable phlegm,' 'it fell near mo, but it wasn't a serious' matter. It fell too near to harm me.' "The writer remarks: The English" character, brave to the pitch of utter indifference to danger, was summed up in the remark of the supply officer." -'
