CALL FOR MORE MEN

CITY'S EFFORTS

RATE EXCEEDS SIXTY DAILY

MORE RECRUITS MAKE CAMP

This week's recruiting in Wellington City has proceeded at the rate of slightly over sixty men.per day.; since Monday ovor 301) men have volunteered. Yesterday thirty-seven men from Wellington City and.suburbs were sent into camp to fill vacancies in the Ninth Reinforcements. These vacancies did not occur in the City quota, but concern other portions of the Wellington Military District-. It was only on Wednesday that the City Office was asked to fill some more gaps, and then tho rer quest was for forty men. A small number of men were hastily notified that their presence was required on Friday morning, and all who came in to enlist or to return their papers were given the . opportunity of going into .camp without delay. However, on Friday, tho request was enlarged to a call for eighty men. Tho men, wanted wore: Seventy infantry, six mounted, two artillery, one carpenter, and one driver. The men obtained were: Twenty-seven infantry, sis mounted, two engineers, one driver, and one carpenter. So all were obtained except the infantry.

This .morning the City men required for the hospital ship are to be chosen by the principal medical officcr of tho district (Major J. S. Elliott). A notification received in WellinEton from District Headquarters, at Palmerston North, 011 Thursday, was interpreted as an instruction to discontinue the publication of the names of recruits. Yesterday, however, it was considered that the communication was not intended to convey such an order, and the names of the men who returned their medical papers were, as usual, handed to the Press. : There is a demand for engineers, and the' City Group Commander (Major A. A. Cqrrigan) has received the following letter from District Headquarters:—"ln consequence of the decision to send illcreased reinforcements for Field Engineers and Signal Service, and in" view of the fact : that officers for these arras of the service are difficult to procure, it should be made known throughout your group that applications should be encouraged from civil engineers to como into camp as probationary N.C.O.'s, with'a view of qualifying for and obtaining commissions in the above branches. The policy _of not granting direct commissions will be adhered to, and it is therefore very necessary that all applicants,,as mentioned above, who do not already hold commissions in the Territorial Force'should come into camp as N.C.O.'s on probation and first qualify by merit and examination for probation to commissioned rank."

ONE AND ALL. Yo sturdiest sons of Britain, and of Britains o'er the seas, v ■ "Tho Day" hat'h come to shake yo m your "homes of sport and ease; _ The Philistines are on ye hard, athirst for blood and goldArise, ye strong, and rend them all, as Samson did of old! No'timo to halt or wonder, for all wondering is done, With snake and tiger both unmasked: in fullest blaze of sun; . __ Then leap yo to tho rescue at the Empire's direst call, ' l With the unity of one man, and the mighty strength of all I Ye understand plain English, being just plain British men; The call is waxing louder—hark ye! there it is again! The cry from over ocean, from our brothers at tho guns, All fighting for their lives —and ours Bulgaris, Turks, and Huns. Then rouse yo! Arm ye! Smito ye! with your mightiest master-stroke, Or bend your neoks in serfdom 'neath tho brutal Teuton yoke! Yo understand plain English—then uprise ye, ono and all; For one and all must rally, or 'tis ono and all shall fall! —Brittieus. ; NJ5w .
