GERMAN DISCIPLINE

A war correspondent of the New York "Times," who was with tho German forces in Galieia, records a remarkablo incident which ho witnessed at the village of Szvidnik, in the Carpathians. Some Austrian and German soldiers were sitting round a fire, and an argument started between an Austrian and a- German. They resorted to their fists, but the appearance of a 3'oung German i lieutenant put a stop to tho encounter. "A long inquisition followed, aid in tho end tho Austrian was lea off and tied to a tree, to stay there until sunset," states the correspondent. As for the German, sinco he was the aggressor, he was ordered to remove his uniform and boots, and everything except his trousers. Then, with his hands tied behind his back, ho was brought before the lieutenant. Before I half realised what had happened, the lieutenant drew his sword and rammed it violently into the man's stomach. There was an, agonising scream, and tho man- fell to the ground. It was the most dastardly and brutal act I have ever seen. Yet no one said a word; on the contrary, a great silence fell upon the company, and overyono was of a sudden off about his business, while two of them took a spado, and scooping up a bit of earth, buried the poor wretch. As for tho young monster of a lieutenant, ho came over to a pump near us, and after wiping his sword carefully upon the turf, washed his bands, and then stood there idly and cleaned his finger nails."
