BITTER COMPLAINTS. NON-DELIVERY OF SOLDIERS' MAILS. By Telegraph—Prosa Association—Copyright Melbourne, October 18. In spite of many bitter complaints from men at the front and their relatives, the postal arrangements serving tlie Expeditionary Forces are most in. adequate. It is estimated that at present there are 60,000 letters addressed to members of the Expeditionary Forces in the Melbourne Dead Letter Office. THREATENED STRIKE IN THE METAL TRADE. HOPES OF SETTLEMENT. Melbourne, October 18. It is hoped that the threatened strike in the metal trade, which was to have commenced to-day, will bo averted, as a conference has been arranged to induce the Wages Board immediately to consider the wages of those involved. THE KIDMAN CASE. MAJOR PAGE ACQUITTED. (Rec. October 18, 9.50 p.m.) Sydney, October 18. Giving evidence in the Kidman case (charges of exploitation in connection with army tenders and supply contracts), Major O'Donnell made a lengthy statement, which showed that Kidman's tenders were dealt with similarly to others. He knew nothing about the other tenders being Kidman's dummies till after the Christmas holidays, and denied ever having had money or favours in any shape from Kidman.
The case for the defence then closed. The jury, before counsel commenced their addresses, acquitted Major Page.' THE MINERS AND THE AGREEMENT. FURTHER OPPOSITION FROM THE LODGES. (Rec. October 18, 9.25 p.m.) Sydney, October 18. Besides the Maitlaud Lodges, a number of the Newcastle Lodges have rejected the agreement arrived at between tho owners and tho Federation delegates. The miners have asked for an increase of from 20 to 26 per cent., whereas the agreement provided for a 6 per cent, increase. The matter will again have to be referred to a compulsory conference.
HIBERNIANS AT THE FRONT. (Reo. October 18, 9.25 p.m.) Sydney, October ]8. It is claimed that five thousand members of the New South Wales Hibernian Society have gone to the war.
