THE RECENT SCENE AT A MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyi'iitht ♦Johannesburg, October 16. Ten men, ■ bearing Dutch names, and a woman, have been arraigned in connection with the riot at Newlands. Evidence was giveii that while General Smuts was speaking, ho was violently accused of murdering; Fourie, also of causing the Rand One of the prisoners shouted, "Kill him!" and the others jumped on a table, exhibiting and kissing photographs of Fouiio and foyers.
General Smuts, at Potchofstroom, replying to tlio Nationalist cry, "Botha and Smuts must go," declared that Is would like nothing bettor than deliverance from tlio hell in which he had lived for two yoars, bui> that tho Government must stick to the people fa the end. He added that if tho Nationalists after the election found themselves in a. small minority and went into armed protest they would again have martial Law.
SOME UGLY INCIDENTS. (Rec. October 18, 8.20 p.m.) Pretoria, October 17. Tho prohibition of the sale of_ rifles and ammunition in Orangia and in the majority of the. districts of the Transvaal lias been extended a further three months. Some ugly electioneering incidents aro reported from Orangia. There was a serious fracas at a Nationalist meeting at Bethulie, when sticks, iron bars, and table knives were used, many people being injured.
