Ho is still, howover, detained in bed in hospital. The body of tho late Hon. J. A. Millar was convoyed south by the Maori last evening. The funeral will take place in Dunedin. Police Superintendent J. O'Donovan, of Dunedin, will succeed Superintendent J. Ellison at Wellington, and Inspector Wright, of Hamilton, has been promoted to tho rank of superintendent, and will succeed Superintendent O'Donovan at Dunedin. Superintendent O'Donovan was known for very many years in Wellington as an efficient and courteous officer, and during the time that ho has occupied responsible positions at Invercargill, Napier, and Dunedin he has thoroughly fulfilled the hopes that had been expressed of his success. Inspector Wright was for some years on the staff of tho district office at Wellington, and later chief of staff in the office of the Commissioner of Police. Ho left there some years ago on more active service as inspector in charge of the Hamilton district, and has'carried out his duties with marked ability. Sir E. 0. Gibbes was a passenger for south by the Maori last evening. An inquest was held .yesterday by the City Coroner (Mr. D. (J. A. Cooper, S.M.) into tho circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Usher Lucas, chief messenger at Parliament House. Deceased expired suddenly on tho wharf on Friday night last, and from tho medical evidenco it appeared that death was due to heart failure accelerated by tho condition of tho lungs. A verdiot was returned accordingly. Mr. and Mrs. E. Petrie, of Epuni Street, have received advico that their son, Corporal E. B, V. (Ted) Petrie, who has been at the Base Hospital, Alexandria, suffering from a wound in tho foot, received on August 7, is now fit for duty. _, At the annual presentation of prizes in connection with the Brooklyn Harriers on Saturday evening the following received trophies:—Wellington provincial cross-country championship shield, A team; Oook Cup, A. C. Clapliam; club champion, N. Onmmings. Other prizewinners were: J. Douglas, H. Meo, H. Eclhouse, AY. Coop, and P.' Harvey. Mesdames Hutton and Howard . and Misses Clark and Fulton, members of tho Ladies' Committee, received the club's gold badge for services rendered. Mr. Stewart, pianist, received a travelling bag.

Mr. F. M. Martin, junior partner in the legal firm of Martin, Atkinson, aiid Martin, and treasurer of tho Wellington Cricket Association, has been instructed to report for duty at Trentham camp to-day. Mr. Martin will join the liilio Brigade.

Captain Lawry, formerly of the Union Company's service, has been appointed captain of the ferry steamer Duchess, in succession to Captain G. P. C. Evans v . who is proceeding to England to offer his services to the Admiralty.

Tho Primate iias appointed' the Rev. Canon H. D. Burton, of St. Michael's, Christchurch, to the Hospital Ship Marama. Canon Burton was a chaplain in the South African War,' and holds the rank of Lieut.-Colonel. Tho Defence Minister has signified to the Primate liis consent to the request of the Bishops, that.a second Anglican chaplain be appointed to the camp at Trentham. Tlio Adjutant-General has also intimated that a chaplain will be required for the c.imn at Tauherinikau. The, Primate hopes to secure the services of Archdeacon Evans, of New Plymouth. The Rev. C. Houchin, of the Diocese of Auckland, lias been appointed chaplain of tho 7th Reinforcements.

Mr. F. S. Pope, secretary of the Department of Agriculture, * Industries, and Commerce, accompanied'by the Director of the Fields snd Horticulture Division (Messrs. Kirk and Brown), will be present at the Hastings Agricultural Show oil Wednesday and Thursday next. After inspecting the Aratakt Horticultural Station. Messrs. Pope and Brown will proceed to Sisborne for a fo'w days, and attend the show there, and very likely will go on to Auckland and the Waikato. Mr. Kirk'may not, however, go further than Napier.

Mrs. Susannah Reeves, an old resi dent of Ma st or ton, died in the local Hos pital on Sunday, at the ago of 69 years Slie landed at Lytteiton ~51 years back and arrived in Mastcrton with her bus band 23 years ago.

Madame Wielaeri, who has been engaged t.o sing at the Wellington Musical Union's ''Joan of Arc'' production at the Town liall to-night, arrived in Wellington by the Mam Trunk train yesterday from Auckland.
